About CAPE

George Mason University's Center for Advanced Proficiency in English (CAPE) has been established in collaboration with the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) and entities of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to provide online English writing courses for non-native English speaking DoD employees through its Language Training Centers (LTC) program. The LTC program is an initiative sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO) and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) to provide language and culture training for DoD personnel. CAPE provides scholarships to DoD employees who are non-native speakers of English to take online courses that will enhance their professional writing and intercultural communication skills critical to DoD mission readiness.

CAPE provides 10-week and 5-week asynchronous online courses, which focus specifically on the professional writing skills and intercultural communication for an American context. Because the courses are available entirely online, this greatly expands the training opportunities to DoD personnel located in regions throughout the US and across the globe. The following are the current courses available:

  • Advanced Professional Writing in English 1: Foundations (10 weeks)
  • Advanced Professional Writing in English 2: Professional Summary Writing (5 weeks)
